This is how it works. The "formula" rewards two things, efficiency at winning championships and consistency. To figure out the efficiency portion, I divided the total world championships a team has by the total number of seasons a team has played, whether in the NFL or in a different league. I multiplied that number by 100 and got the team's base number. For example, the Packers have won 12 championships. They have played 91 seasons (not including this year because they are still playing). That comes out to .13186, and then multiplied by 100 it is 13.186. That was the highest for the efficiency portion. Now, a world championship, in the case of these rankings, is an NFL Championship prior to the Super Bowl era or a Super Bowl championship.
The consistency portion is a little bit different. Each team gets a certain amount of points for different factors. These factors and their point value are as follows: NFL Championship during Super Bowl era and before NFL/AFL merger (.75), non-NFL Championship (.65), conference championship (.5), post-season victories (.3), division championship (.25), and post-season appearence (.2). I had to do that first one because otherwise it messes up the rankings because the AFL gave out it's own title at the time. And the NFL Championships from those four seasons are worth more than AFL ones because of the strength of the NFL as a whole as compared tot he AFL. Adding this all up, you get a second number. For example, the Cowboys scored highest here with 26.15. They had 0 NFLChampionships during the Super Bowl era (0 points), 0 non-NFL Championships (0), 10 conference championships (5), 33 post-season wins (9.9), 21 division championships (5.25), and 30 post-season appearences (6). Other than those first two categories, they were number 1 in everyhting except conference championships, where they were 2. Add that to the fact that they have been around 51 seasons, far fewer than many of the other teams, they have proven to be the most consistent team when it comes to contending for a title.
The final number is derived from adding the two numbers together. Take the Packers and Cowboys for example. The packers scored 13.186 on the efficiency portion, the only team over 10. But, they haven't been as consistent as some teams and only scored a 22.35 on the consistency portion. Their total number is 35.536. The Cowboys had the third highest efficiency score with 9.804. But, as said, they had the highest consistency score at 26.15. That gives them a total of 35.954.
Now I know one big complaint is going to be rewarding less for world championships and it is not fair, but that is not the case. Teams like the Packers and Bears, who won a majority of their titles before the Super Bowl era, had much easier roads to go through since they only had to play one post-season game, the championship game. teams who have had a great deal of success in the Super Bowl era, such as the Cowboys, will benefit from that because they had tougher roads to travel to attain those championships.
Another complaint will be biaism. I tried not to do that, but 100% objectivity is an impossible goal. Take these rankings for example, I have more respect for a Super Bowl championship than I do for ones that came before that era because of the higher degree of difficulty. Why? Probably because my team has had basically all of their success in that area. And that claim will be magnified when looking at the rankings, but I honest to God, didn't know how they would turn out and was in fact surprised, happily I admit, to see who was on top.
Now, I may have made mistakes when adding the numbers and doing all the math, in fact I'm sure I did. And if someone points that out to me i will gladly correct that mistake or mistakes. So here they are:
